"Shooting pool hasn't been this intense since The Hustler. Gabriele Fabbro's short film 8 is a stylish and thrilling tale of a pool player hoping to find redemption, loaded with brilliant camera trickery and an engulfing atmosphere."

‘8’: Pulsating; This Meet Cute Will Be Hard To Forget

"What remains noteworthy are the characters, the music and sepia-toned visual appeal that 8 brings to screen. Knapp’s restrained performance, where even her gloved hands do the talking or Esteban de la Isla’s impish grin make for subtle additions to their terrific performances."

"Gabriele Fabbro has blessed us with an original, mesmerizing and visually stylish film that not only deserves the many awards and nominations it has since garnered, but also breathes new life into the billiards movies canon."

THE PRODUCTION

Summer 2018 - April 2019

The script was written in summer 2017. Pre-production commenced in September 2017. Gabriele focused on assembling a team of talented filmmakers willing to push against the limitations of the budget and deliver a high quality product. The cinematographer Brandon Lattman had a very important role in this project since the film was split in over 100 complex shots. The production designer Nicholas Hagen had another key role for the film. He was able to portray in details the rustiness of Gabriele's western world. One of his most taught tasks include finding Jack's Car and building the decadent sign of the saloon.

The filming happened in March 2018 and took 8 days split into two different locations. The interior scenes were shot in Los Angeles, at the First Street Pool and Billiard, while the exteriors were shot in Lancaster.

Post production took 4 months. Gabriele experimented a lot to achieve the right energetic tone to cut the picture with.

KEY CAST

The film is proud to present a cast of talented young actors, faces that will get more familiar as time goes by.

KEY CREW

Making a film is like climbing a mountain. It's hard work. It requires mental and physical concentration but on top of that, requires a constant attitude towards experiments. Without experimenting, we make mediocrities and not Movies.

THE SCORE

Composed by Sean Goldman

The score was one of the most innovative adventures of this project. Gabriele and the composer Sean Goldman spent an entire year to refine the soundtrack for 8. The composing process begun in parallel with the development of the script. The score is centered on a traditional Russian folk song "Polyushko Polye". The melody best depicted the style and the emotional tensions of the characters. After the outline was locked, Gabriele composed few demo arrangements of the theme to help Sean shaping the vibe of the score. Using the demos as a starting point, the talented Sean Goldman composed an outstanding score full of grime, sweat and passion. His meticulous attention to the sound of the instruments allowed him to pull out the most realistic and espressive textures from his keyboard. Listening to the score, it's hard to believe that sounds like the Choir have been produced entirely by Sean's keyboard.
